Craig Speirs

What a player. Midfield player that most teams would like to have. Could pass a ball with either foot and could shield a ball like Kenny Dalglish. Very difficult player to play against. Always played fairly. Better passer of a ball than David Beckham.

It is said that a really top international player will be on the ball for no more than 3 minutes out of a 90 minutes game. I have seen Craigie keep the ball for at least 5 mins i na game. What a player. He could burst the net with his shots from either foot.

Brilliant player and nothing upset him. He was once playing in an important game and said to his team mate : " Do we have any newspaper ? ". - " Whit " was the reply. " Why ? " said his team mate. " I need a shit " said Craig. And off he went. Most players do this before a big game, but not Craigie. He came back and played a stormer. He should be in the Greatest team from Rutherglen. A midfield of Bobby Murdoch and Craig Speirs would be hard to better. Just my opinion.

Craigie was a complete diamond - fantastic player and a top man . He could shield a nip nearly as well as he could shield the ball !

Did Craig score a goal the night Fernhill beat the German team 7-1 ? - I think that McKeown, Bennett and Harvey also scored that night. What a midfield that was: McKeown, Harvey, Speirs and Bennett. They would pass the other teams off the park. I wonder what happend to them all.Fernhill had some really good players then in the early 1970's.

Craigie was built like a bull, almost square in build and short powerful legs that could propel the ball with incredible power. On a cold winters day if you got hit in the legs with one of his shots you were left with a black and blue tattoo - it was sore especially if it was a mould master ball.

Craig was as good as Paul Scholes and just as hard. He wsa a quiet assassin, but once he got the ball, thinhs happened. Great football brain.
