Bernie Grant

Strong strong footballer. Could run all day but could also play. Made his debut for Motherwell against Celtic and was the best player on the field.

I didn't play with Motherwell, I played with Bernie at Cumbernauld Juniors, and I'll add to his praises on here. Bernie gave everything and he could play too! He had fantastic stamina, and on a personal level, he was a lovely fella and a good player to have playing beside you. He was always looking to create something and his enthusiasm was infectious. I seem to remember he got man of the match against Hibs at Easter Rd, but in the Celtic game V Motherwell, he couldn't get anywhere near Paul McStay, but then again, who could? I was at the game and it showed me how different the fitness between full time and part time footballers. Please pass on my best regards to Bernie. I was the left back.

Bernie epitomised the word professional,no matter what level he played at he always gave it his all and made players round about him play.an inspirational player who hated losing, even if it was a game of 5s.

Play in the same team as Bernie for the old crocks and he still runs about like a teenager, always wants to win but his confidence took a wee bit of a hammering the day he got pegged by a 65yr old jimmy Lynn in an old crocks game a couple of months ago :-)

Jim I recall the Sunday Mail the next Day had Bernie the top Motherwell player and also despite a heavy defeat was also in the team of the Day.In my experience of Bernie in football and I have been privileged to have played and latterly ran teams with Bernie the thing that stands out is the respect he commands from his peers.Even in his Forties he was leading from the front and was,has and is an inspiration to those around him.

I played in the same team(Cumbernauld Utd juniors)as Bernie. He could run all day and he could play, but best player in his Motherwell debut against Celtic? You must be joking!! He was 10 yards behind Paul McStay for the whole game.

I think Bernie played with Lesmahagow Juniors or Petershill. Good professional player. I once heard a story that when he was a sub during a game his manager told him to go and warm up. So Bernie went up to the old pie shop for a hot pie and bovril.!! Good player and still see him around the Royal Burgh.
