In 1970 John was the first Gallowflat player toi be selected for the Scottish school boys team in over 40 years. The last pupil to wear a dark blue jersey was Adam Little who went onto play for Rangers before World War Two.

At 15 years old John played in a high scoring Galloflat school team. He attracted the attention of lots of senior clubs. he played trials for Hibs, Kilmarnock, West Bromich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Rangers. He played for his school team in the morning and Rangers Boys Club in the afternoon. His school team scored an incredible 162 goals in a season for loss of only 22.
