Andy Martin

What a centre half the big man was, another Fernhill Athletic player also played with Hoover,Clyde United ,Netherlee Ams,Tam Broons and the Cathkin. He was fearless, superb in the air and one the best tacklers you'll see.Should have played at the highest level. The big man is sadly missed.

Aye, Andy Martin a great player and better than that a great friend.Dixie and Jamie sum him up perfectly. Jamie, I think the game you talking about where I scored, after Andy had beaten half the opposition was Bishopton away. If you remember it was my birthday and the "big man" just laughed as we sunk about 20 pints in the burnside, or maybe the Dart Inn. Great Days and memories. HAD MANY A GREAT TIME WITH ANDY AND STAYING AT HIS HOUSE IN FERNHILL. Miss the man.

I was in a pub on the Main Street today and I heard someone say that Andy ( who I do not know) had the build of Bobby Murdoch and was some player. What a compliment if you are being compared to Murdy. Lots of people check this website once a week. The local stories are good. Ruglonians are the best in the land.

Can anyone remember the game when we were playing for Fernhill where Andy waltzed forward beat about half of the opposition including the goalie and was just getting ready to tap it into an empty net when Lloydie appeared from nowhere and stroked the ball into the net. These were absolutely brilliant times - if my memory serves me right Llloydie made up for it by offering Andy a shot of his hair drier after the game - sorry for letting your secret out Davie.

In my view, the big man was without doubt the best centre half to come out of Rutherglen. The comments by Dixie below sum him up perfectly - a raw talent that was happy playing with his mates (sometimes having to look out for them on the park in some of the rougher areas that we played). It is frightening to think how far he could have gone in the game if he had given half the amount of dedication and committment as some of the other nominees on this site, including myself. This guy deserves to be in the best Ru'glen team not because he is no longer with us or because he is my brother but because quite simply he is the best centre half that Ru'glen has produced - I have played with and against many on this site - wonder how many strikers out there would admit to enjoying playing against him. No Sympathy votes for the big man please - he wouldn't want them and in my view shouldn't need them to make the team.

Re note below about the street football tournament: Dalveen Way team (Dal Real) beat the Galloway Drive team (Galloway Rovers)in the final - Big Jimmy was involved, as with a lot of other fathers in Fernhill and this tournament basically kicked off Fernhill Athletic as one of the major players within youth football at that time. Sure there are many out there who remember playing against the visiting German teams. Great days and some absolutely brilliant players within the scheme.

Re note below from about big Jimmy Martin. I think he was one of the organisers of the street football tournament that was played in the summer in Fernhill in the early 1970’s. All the streets put forward a team: Galloway Drive, Dalveen Way, Neilvaig Drive, Castlefern Road and others. All the street teams had name. The whole community use to go over the Fernhill pitches on hot summer nights to watch all the budding footballers. It was brilliant and never any trouble, althought the games were competitive. You did not want to let down your pals. When I look back it is Happy Days. Simple things made us happy. Wonderful place to have grown up and loads of good players came from the scheme.

The Martins were a well known football family in Fernhill. I seem to remember that their Dad ( big Jimmy) was also one of the first people to help start Fernhill Athletic. Also there was as sister ( Anita I think) who helped the Fernhill committee around 1970. She once wrote a letter to the Rutherglen Reformer thanking the locals for their help after a lot of equipment ( balls, jerseys, etc ) were stolen: this included the clothes of the under 17 team !! Fernhill was a real community in those days.

Big Donut was simply different class. What a great player Andy was,he could header, tackle, nutmeg centre forwards,go on mazy runs, dribble for fun and loved a scrap.A real pleasure playing with him.He and brother Jamie were one formidable centre back partnership. Can still see the big man during the warm up trying flying headers and slide tackling. Before the games had even started he was usually covered in mud with a big baw Mark in the middle of his head.Great memories!!!!
